A cryptocurrency (or crypto-currency) is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange wherein individual coin ownership records are stored in a digital ledger or computerized database using strong cryptography to secure transaction record entries, to control the creation of additional digital coin records, and to verify the transfer of coin ownership.
One of the reasons most of the altcoins are so attractive to investors is both the smart contract blockchain technology and the price. Cardano, Chainlink, Syscoin, Zilliqa, Stellar, and Ethereum to name a few.
By design, a blockchain is resistant to modification of the data. It is "an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way". For use as a distributed ledger, a blockchain is typically managed by a peer-to-peer network collectively adhering to a protocol for inter-node communication and validating new blocks. Once recorded, the data in any given block cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks, which requires consensus of the network majority. Proof of Work (PoW) is a form of cryptographic zero-knowledge proof in which one party (the Prover) proves to others (the Verifiers) that a certain amount of computational effort has been expended for some purpose. The Proof of Stake (PoS) concept states that a person can mine or validate block transactions according to how many coins they hold. This means that the more coins owned by a miner, the more mining power they have.
Bitcoin is a consensus network that enables a new payment system and completely digital money. It is the first decentralized peer-to-peer payment network that is powered by its users with no central authority or middlemen. From a user perspective, Bitcoin is pretty much like cash for the Internet. Bitcoin can also be seen as the most prominent triple entry bookkeeping system in existence. Reference bitcoin.org.
A Satoshi is the smallest unit of the Bitcoin currency and is equivalent to one hundred millionth of a single Bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). You don't have to purchase one whole Bitcoin, you can spend $10, $100, $1000, or $10,000 and buy as many Satoshi's as you like!
